Want to teach English to Amazon River Natives?

06 Feb
Here is an opportunity for anyone who speaks English and Spanish. We are looking for an individual or several persons that would be interested in teaching English in the village of Oran. The idea would be to accept a class of twenty persons of all ages and teach them the basics of English. Although a very basic English is taught in the public schools, there is a lack of English speakers to help build a strong base of the language.

For the most part there is a great interest in younger persons to learn English and work in tourism. The class will be made up of people interested in learning so there is nothing obligatory about the class.

This is a volunteer position so there is no pay. You will get to stay on the grounds of the Otorongo expedition jungle lodge while teaching in the village. We will provide your meals at the lodge but there is a minimum cost of food of fifteen dollars per day.

There will be occasions that the class will be allowed onto the grounds of the lodge so they can learn more about the service of tourism and the English words that go along with it.

Apart from learning English, the people of the community will begin to understand the importance of being diverse and multicultural while at the same time being proud of who they are and where they live. Many people take for granted and do not understand the full complexity of this world we live in.

The persons who agree to volunteer for this need not be high maintenance. We will not be treating you as a tourist but as one of us who works with local people for the sustainable development of the region. You must be able to get out of your comfort zone for this, the Amazon river is underdeveloped considerably as soon as you leave the main metropolitan areas. So make sure you bring a flashlight and plenty of rechargeable batteries.

Other things to consider:

Hepatitis b vaccine

Yellow fever vaccine

Tetanus booster

Flashlight x 2

Long sleeve shirts and pants

Insect repellent

Other personal hygienic needs

A sense of adventure and the desire to experience new things

If you are interested in this volunteer position, please email Anthony and Ivy Giardenelli at

What level of Spanish are you interested in?

Hello Martin, a basic knowledge of the Spanish language would be needed to be able to communicate ideas to the people. It would make the process of interaction between the students and teacher much easier.

When would this take place and for how long?

      Hello Alex!
This is going to be a year round program executed by volunteers, rotating depending on their availability to stay. There will be transitions when no one is available to teach and I would personally fill in but I am hoping that we will get plenty of people interested.

It would be best that volunteers can dedicate one month or more so progress is not interrupted abruptly.
I currently have one student from SUNY Cobleskill that is committing to four weeks in August

One day I would love to do something like this, unfortunately my limitation on time during my trip this Spring won’t allow it.
It’s a great idea though and I hope you are successful with the program!

    Hi there
I know this blog is 2.5 years old, but would you still be accepting volunteers? I am a elementary school teacher in Canada looking to volunteer in the Amazons next summer.
