Birdwatching with pros

Our guides are trained to recognize hundreds of species of birds by sight and sound. Specialist birds around the Otorongo Expeditions Amazon River Lodge

Located in the middle of the District of Las Amazonas.  Our Lodge is in the interior of the Oran Creek bordering white water flooded forests (Varzea) and terra firme forest east of the Napo River.

The Oran Creek is located on the Northern margin of the Amazon River just below its confluence with the Napo River. Around the lodge, it is possible to rack up 100 birds in a weeks’ time without moving off the lodge property (even more during austral/ boreal migrations) .Our facility is in such an area of distinct converging ecosystems that the diversity is staggering. With enough time and patience, over 300 birds can be spotted within short travelling distance from the lodge.

Known as a Pleistocene refuge, this area has benefited from climatic stability for millions of years. Meanwhile other areas of the Amazon were converting to open savannas or dry forest types.  The local avifauna touts this fact with the presence of several specialist birds such as

 black headed antbird,

zimmers woodcreeper,

point tailed palm creeper,

helmeted pygmy tyrant,

orange eyed flycatcher,

ocre striped antpitta,

spotted antpitta.

We have many birds that are considered “Lifers” That are right around the lodge like the Undulated Tinamou , White throated toucan, Chestnut eared aracari, Red bellied macaws , Orange winged Parrots , Blue headed Parrot, Sunbittern ,  Sungrebe , Wire tailed Manakin, Varzea schiffornis , Orange eyed flycatcher, Green back trogon, Collared trogon, White eared Jacamar, Spotted Puffbird, White necked Puffbird, Black Fronted Nunbird ,Russet back oropendola, Yellow rumped cacique. So much fun!

For 4 days and 3 nights we were transported to another world and shown around by two of the most badass people you can't even imagine, Eddie and Robin aka Diablo.

We exchanged stories over delicious meals and set out on adventures I would never dream of going on alone but with complete trust followed along and was blown away by the grand and awesome Amazon rainforest.

Eddie is an endless source of knowledge and a true inspiration to anyone lucky enough to meet him. For all the birders out there, he's your guy!

Our experience with Otorongo expeditions was life changing, worth every penny, and we'd go back in a heartbeat!

Heart filled thank you,

Carmelida & Francois

Life changing Amazon experience!

Our experience with Otorongo was absolutely incredible. The staff was top-notch and the housing accomodations far exceeded our expectations. Whatever you want to do in the area, the staff is super flexible and will do their best to make it happen.

Alan was our English speaking tour guide and Tayo was our local guide. Alan put together a trip of a lifetime for our group of 4. We dedicated a large chunk of our trip to river/lake fishing and caught a plethora of unique fish species. We also spent significant amounts of time on hiking and boat excursions to find exotic species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, monkeys, and dolphins.

Another key element to our overall happiness with this experience was the fact that the kitchen staff was as good as it gets. Every meal was delicious and made with high quality and local ingredients. I wish I could remember the names of the kitchen staff because they deserve more recognition.

From talking with other people that have done similar excursions, I'd put money on Otorongo as the best expedition company in this area of the Amazon. When we go back, we will definitely be booking with Otorongo again. Thank you Alan, Tayo, the kitchen staff, Ivonne, and Anthony for such an amazing experience.
