Rainforest Awareness Rescue and Education Center.

I would like to take a moment to recognize the Rainforest Awareness Rescue and Education Center. (RAREC) Orchestrated by Mr John Jairo Garnica and his partner Kathya Ribbeck .This center is a tremendous tool for conservation in the Amazon River and Rainforest. In their area of the Iquitos, The center is responsible for conservation education in their neighborhood and further reaching to distant communities.

RAREC is a responsible hub for people to come in close contact with endangered species. There are many said rescue centers near Iquitos but few have the passion required to act in the best interests of the animals they say to protect.

Many people will visit this center and come away with a new understanding and love for the natural world. It is hard to instill passion and love with a simple computer screen. The act of sharing space with amazing creatures will instill a lifetime of passion for any open minded individual.

The RAREC compound is on Km 47 of the road to Nauta from Iquitos. It is nested away from the urban center to ensure the privacy and space needed to have such an organization

RAREC offers a unique opportunities for individuals to volunteer at the center. Everyone should lend a hand to John and his team. They can use all the help they can get physically AND financially. Here is an excerpt from the Full Day program that is offered by them.

For the objective of raising awareness about the importance of the animals of our Amazon, in RAREC direct contact with the animals in custody is not allowed. Our interest is to provide education about the different species of our Amazon, as well as information about the work of a rescue center, the observation of the animals in custody makes the public aware of the problems that exist and how to combat the illegal trade of animals and their derivatives, for that reason the tourist can participate in the preparation of food, observe the caretaker's management in the environments feeding each of the animals and take pictures, while explaining one by one the provenance and particularities of each animal in custody, but you are not allowed to touch them.

In RAREC we are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and subsequent release of animals wild animals that can be reintroduced into their natural habitats. In addition we complement this work with environmental education for children and youth, and training in activities of sustainable development for adults in rural villages, close to natural habitats, with the objective of raising awareness among the population about the protection of biodiversity and offering alternatives to generate income that conserve the environment.

We have international sponsors such as Nashville Zoo, Merlin Entertainment, Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld and Busch Garden Conservation Fund, Save the Manatee Club and Columbus Zoo; who are interested in promoting education about the conservation of wildlife and research through scientific programs for conservationists and academic
